Fashion Your First Time At Fashion Week? Let Me Show You Around! As New Zealand Fashion Week 2025 opens its doors to the public for the first time, Angus McDougall chats with Fashion Week board director Liam Taylor about breaking down the myths of exclusivity and embracing the week’s inclusive spirit.
New Zealand Fashion Week, presented by the Giltrap Group, has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve been attending for over 25 years, and from the very beginning, it felt like I belonged. As a queer person, I’ve always found it to be a safe, affirming, and truly welcoming environment—no judgement, just compliments and camaraderie. It’s where I’ve made lifelong friends, found endless inspiration, and forged valuable connections.
Now, for the very first time, NZFW is open to the public—and I couldn’t be more excited.
To mark the occasion, I caught up with someone leading this exciting new chapter, Liam Taylor, who serves as director of the NZFW Board. He also happens to be the husband of my close friend, iconic Kiwi shoe designer Kathryn Wilson. Although he’s usually behind the scenes, Liam’s vision is front and centre this year.
“Fashion is about creativity and self-expression,” Liam said. “These are values that deeply resonate with the LGBTQIA+ community. NZFW invites people to show up and express who they are through what they wear.”
For anyone who’s never been and worries about fitting in, Liam offers reassuring advice. “Fashion Week often carries an intimidating stereotype,” he says. “But the New Zealand fashion scene thrives on individuality and diversity.” His tip? “Wear what makes you feel good. Confidence is what makes you look the part.”

This year’s schedule is bursting with bold new voices and diverse perspectives. “We’re showcasing a vibrant mix of creativity, so there’s something for everyone,” Liam says. Beyond the catwalk, NZFW is amping up its support for local talent. “Our fashion industry has always been about risk-taking and doing things differently,” he explains. “We’ve waived designer fees for 2025, launched new scholarship opportunities, and expanded our Futures of Fashion Showcase.”
Thanks to support from Giltrap, these initiatives aren’t just sustainable—they’re set to thrive. “The enthusiasm we’re seeing from all corners has been so reaffirming,” Liam shares. “It shows how vital NZFW is in bringing people together.”
So if you’ve been waiting for the right moment, this is it. Dust off your best looks, embrace your inner rebel, or just come as you are. NZFW 2025, taking place from 23 to 30 August at Auckland’s Shed 10, is shaping up to be a week of fearless fashion, vibrant community, and boundless creativity.
