When Uncloseted Media tracked the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s second administration earlier this year, they found a sweeping attack on LGBTQ+ rights. That assault has only intensified. From health care and education to military service and suicide prevention, the Trump administration’s moves between days 101 and 200 (May–August 2025) have sparked alarm among advocates and legal experts.
May 2025
- May 1: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) publishes a 409-page report on “pediatric gender dysphoria,” endorsing “gender exploratory therapy.” The authors were left anonymous, later revealed to include MIT philosophy professor Alex Byrne, who faced criticism for lacking medical expertise. Medical groups condemned the report as “biased” and akin to conversion therapy.
- May 4: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) slashes more than $800 million in LGBTQ-related health research, halting studies on cancers, viruses and STIs that disproportionately affect queer people.
- May 5: The Department of Justice removes all references to gender identity from at least four federal surveys, erasing vital data on violence against trans people.
- May 7: The Supreme Court allows Trump’s ban on transgender military service to take effect immediately, prompting retired Navy officer Alaina Kupec to call it “a really dark day for our country.”
- May 27: Trump threatens to withhold federal funding from California if it allows transgender high school athlete AB Hernandez to compete. The state refuses, and Hernandez competes.
- May 30: NIH ends funding for the Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development, with researchers warning it could delay progress by a decade.
June 2025
- Trump refuses to issue a Pride Month proclamation. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt avoids using the word “Pride.”
- June 3: The Pentagon strips LGBTQ+ pioneer Harvey Milk’s name from a naval vessel. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says ships should not honour civil rights leaders.
- June 6: The transgender military ban is fully enforced, with involuntary discharges beginning.
- June 9: Hundreds of NIH staff sign the Bethesda Declaration, condemning political interference in scientific research.
- June 17: The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline announces the closure of LGBTQ youth services. On the same day, the White House criticises a federal ruling protecting gender-affirming passports. Plaintiff Reid Solomon-Lane warns the policy would forcibly out trans people and risk their safety.
- June 18: In U.S. v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court upholds Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, leaving 25 statewide bans in effect. Trans youth respond: “Lawmakers don’t need to be involved in my doctor visits.”
- June 30: The administration withholds $7 billion in school funding, partly over LGBTQ-inclusive education, before later relenting under pressure.
July 2025
- July 2: HHS orders teen pregnancy prevention programs to exclude LGBTQ content, threatening funding for 73 organisations.
- July 4: Trump signs his “Big Beautiful Bill”, slashing HIV and LGBTQ health funding.
- July 9: The DOJ subpoenas over 20 clinics and doctors providing gender-affirming care to minors.
- July 10: Mentions of bisexuality are removed from the National Park Service’s Stonewall Monument site.
- July 17: The LGBTQ-specific option on the 988 youth hotline is officially shut down. Arden, a former caller, recalls: “If it weren’t for the hotline, I would have killed myself.”
- July 18: Nearly $10 million in contraceptives purchased for defunct overseas programs are set to be destroyed, due in part to Trump’s expanded “global gag rule.”
- July 21: The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee bans transgender women from competing in women’s events, citing Trump’s executive order.
- July 22: The Department of Homeland Security dismisses torture and assault claims by deported gay asylum seeker Andry Hernández Romero, labelling him a “criminal” despite no record.
- July 24: Artist Amy Sherald cancels a Smithsonian show after officials attempt to remove her painting of a trans Statue of Liberty, citing political fears.
August 2025
- Aug 1: Sixteen states and D.C. sue the administration over its push for a nationwide ban on gender-affirming care. New York Attorney General Letitia James writes: “The federal government is running a cruel and targeted harassment campaign.”
