US Representative Sarah McBride (D-DE) has criticised Fox News for highlighting her transgender identity in a headline that had nothing to do with LGBTQ+ issues.
The Fox article focused on McBride’s sharp rebuke of Donald Trump’s latest attacks on mail-in voting. In her comments, McBride said Trump “is taking notes from his favourite dictator” and accused his administration of engaging in “an all-out assault not just on free and fair elections—but on American democracy itself.”
However, Fox ran the story under the headline:
“Transgender Democrat accuses Trump of ‘all-out assault’ against ‘American democracy.’”
The first line also read: “Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride of Delaware, who identifies as a transgender woman, accused…”
McBride swiftly called out the framing on X:
“What does my identity have to do with the fact that Trump is trying to rig our elections? Nothing — unless you’re as obsessed with identity politics as the right wing.”
She added bluntly:
“Also, I said what I said.”
This isn’t the first time McBride has been singled out by conservative media and politicians. Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) lashed out at McBride for reading to children, outrageously labelling her a “child predator.”
Despite repeated attempts to weaponise her identity, McBride has maintained focus on her legislative priorities, including voting rights, healthcare access, and protections for marginalised communities.
