Jason Collins, NBA’s First Out Gay Player, Diagnosed with Brain Tumour

Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in the NBA, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, his family confirmed. The 46-year-old former center is currently undergoing treatment.

“Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being,” his family said in a statement released through the NBA.

A Trailblazing Career

Collins’ 13-year career in the league included stints with the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics, and Wizards.

In 2013, he came out publicly, making history as the first active player in any of North America’s four major sports leagues to do so. His courage was widely seen as a milestone for LGBTQ+ visibility in professional sports. Collins retired in 2014.

Love & Support

Collins has been in a relationship with film producer Brunson Green since 2014, and the couple married earlier this year.

The Brooklyn Nets, one of Collins’ former teams, posted a message of support on social media:

“Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family.”
