Elton John Shares Heartbreaking Health News: “I Haven’t Been Able to See Anything”

LGBTQ+ Music icon Sir Elton John has revealed that he is currently unable to see out of one eye following a serious infection last year, in what he describes as one of the most challenging periods of his life.

Despite the setback, the legendary singer remains hopeful and grateful, expressing optimism that medical science will eventually provide a solution.

Elton John Details Vision Loss

The 78-year-old opened up about his health during an interview with Variety, where he was being honoured as their Philanthropist of the Year for 2025 — an accolade he described as “an incredible and generous recognition.”

Reflecting on the past year, he explained that an eye infection contracted in France—shortly after he was hospitalised following a fall at his villa—has left him blind in one eye, and with limited vision in the other.

“Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything,” he told Variety.

“There is hope”

Though the news is devastating, Elton remains upbeat and grounded in gratitude.

“I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope,” he said.

“I’ve just gotta be patient, that someday science will help me with this one. Once they help me with this one, I’ll be fine.”

Still Creating, Still Surprising

Despite his health challenges, Elton continues to keep active and engaged. In September, fans were momentarily alarmed when he shared a photo of himself in a hospital with both legs in casts on Instagram.

The post turned out to be a tongue-in-cheek promotion for his cameo in the upcoming sequel to the cult classic This Is Spinal Tap, the 1984 rock mockumentary.
