Boots Cast Respond to Cancellation: “Keep telling your queer stories”

The stars of Boots, the acclaimed LGBTQ+ military drama, are speaking out following the show’s unexpected cancellation by Netflix. Despite critical praise and a passionate fanbase, the streaming platform confirmed the series would not return for a second season — and the cast has been candid about their disappointment, while also expressing deep appreciation for the community they built on and off screen.

Miles Heizer (Cameron Cope)

Miles Heizer, who played lead character Cameron Cope and was honoured on the Out100 list in 2025, took to social media to share a heartfelt message following the announcement.

“Well, I’m sad to report that Boots isn’t being renewed for a second season,” he wrote. “I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support they gave this show. It truly shattered my expectations, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Heizer thanked creator Greg for trusting the cast with his story, and paid tribute to the generations of LGBTQ+ activists who paved the way.

“I grew up so afraid of what being gay would mean for my life. So to be on the other side of that, feeling so uplifted and supported, is still insane to me.”

He added, on a humorous note:

“The friends I made and being called woke garbage by the Pentagon are things I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Angus O’Brien (Hicks)

Angus O’Brien, beloved for his role as Hicks, posted a touching Instagram Story reflecting on the personal growth he experienced while working on Boots:

“I started this show, newly sober, nervous as hell, and trying to figure out this next part of my life. You helped me believe in myself. My place in the industry, and my worth as a person outside of the work.”

He expressed gratitude for his castmates, calling them his “platoon” and “sister for life,” and concluded with a note of temporary farewell:

“I’ll probably be off the internet for a bit, but I’m always a phone call or text away.”

In a follow-up post, he wished followers happy holidays and added:

“Love you all. Happy holidays and see you in the new year! Thank you for everything!”

Sachin Bhatt (Major Wilkinson)

Sachin Bhatt, who portrayed Major Wilkinson, also shared his thanks via Instagram Stories:

“Thank you to everyone who watched it and reached out. It touched people of all ages and backgrounds. Sending lots of love to the Boots family.”

In another Story, Bhatt posted a still of Major Wilkinson with his on-screen love interest, Sgt. Sullivan (played by Max Parker), adding:

“Keep telling your queer stories.”

Jack Cameron Kay (Joshua Jones)

Jack Cameron Kay addressed fans directly through a TikTok video, expressing a mix of sadness and pride after the official cancellation news:

“We just got word that Netflix has canceled Boots. I’m sad to hear it actually, officially said out loud… But, you know, what makes me the saddest is just reading everybody’s messages.”

He acknowledged the show’s strong fan reaction and the confusion over the decision, saying:

“It doesn’t really make any sense to me either. There are so many factors that go into these decisions… But it does just feel like, no matter how you cut it, the show performed well.”

Kay admitted he didn’t know if his character would return in a potential second season, but stressed:

“I just wanted the show to continue… I think it’s a good show. And no one can tell me it wasn’t successful.”

He closed by thanking the viewers and reaffirming his pride:

“I’m proud of my work in the show. And I’m grateful for the experience, nonetheless. And Jones still loves you.”
