Netflix’s Boots was officially cancelled this week, dashing hopes for a second season from fans, cast, and crew alike. However, according to producer Brent Miller, the storyline for Season 2 was already outlined — and he’s not giving up on finding a new home for the show.
Speaking to Variety, Miller acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the cancellation while expressing pride in the series.
“I do feel so grateful that we were able to make the show,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the show we made.”
Miller also addressed fan theories suggesting the show had nowhere to go after Season 1. Not so, he confirmed. Boots creator and showrunner Andy Parker “had always intended to take the boys to war in a season 2.”
This confirms that the team had long-term plans beyond adapting Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, the basis for Season 1.
Could Boots Be Saved by Another Streamer?
There’s still a sliver of hope for Boots. While Netflix produced and distributed the show, Sony Pictures Television and other production companies were also involved — meaning Season 2 could theoretically be picked up by another network or streaming platform.
Miller pointed to examples such as:
- One Day at a Time, cancelled by Netflix and revived by Pop TV for a fourth season
- Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris, which was picked up by Showtime after its Netflix cancellation (though it was later dropped)
Both shows, notably, were also Sony Pictures Television productions — suggesting Boots may follow a similar path.
Miller added that the late Norman Lear, who served as an executive producer on Boots, would have encouraged fans to fight for a second season.
“Although he [Lear] was aware that cancellations happen all the time for various business decisions,” Miller said, “he would empower myself, our fellow EPs and Sony to do everything humanly possible for our actors, writers and producers to try and find ourselves a new home.”
Lear “would have encouraged the fans to make their voices be heard in the loudest ways possible to ensure a season 2 — wherever, whenever,” he added.
Why Did Netflix Cancel Boots?
No official reason has been provided by Netflix for the show’s cancellation. However, some fans have speculated the move could be politically motivated.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon controversially referred to Boots as “woke garbage,” leading some to suggest the cancellation was an attempt by Netflix to appease the Trump administration amid ongoing merger discussions. Netflix recently announced plans to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery, a move that will require approval from both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Actor Nicholas Logan (Sgt. Howitt) was not shy about voicing his thoughts, posting a video saying the cancellation “smells like… a Donald Trump butt queef.”
A Fully Formed Story — With More to Tell
While some critics argued that Boots had already told a complete story, mirroring the trajectory of The Pink Marine, the creative team refuted claims the series had run its course.
Producers cited shows like Orange Is the New Black, which adapted Piper Kerman’s single memoir into a seven-season hit, as evidence that Boots could also have expanded beyond its source material.
Whether or not a Season 2 comes to life elsewhere, it’s clear the story — and fanbase — is far from finished.
