Over 650 attendees made the journey two and a half hours north of Wellington this summer to take part in the warm, inclusive, and ever-colourful Vinegar Hill gathering — a beloved bohemian camping experience set at Putai Ngahere Domain, Hunterville.

The 2025 edition embraced a lively medieval theme, celebrating creativity and connection in classic Vinegar Hill fashion. From jesters to knights, the campground buzzed with community spirit and cheeky theatrics. This year’s event continued the gathering’s long-standing focus on inclusivity — a place where difference is not only welcomed but joyfully celebrated.

At the heart of the revelry was the crowning of the new camp queen, Corey Jury, who will reign over the Hill for the coming year. Queen Corey joins a rich tradition of community-appointed camp royalty.
Among the many highlights was the first-ever feast, catered for 150 attendees by Thyme 2 Ryes Bakery in Pahiatua.
Court jester Lisa and town crier Toni kept the camp in high spirits, stirring up mischief and laughter throughout the week. A particularly memorable evening saw attendees dive into a murder mystery hosted by Emmery. The fictional demise of Madge Estee led to wild attempts at clue-finding — including volunteers braving cold tinned snails and fiery habanero peppers after one too many wines.
One unexpected crowd favourite? The hobby horse races, orchestrated by Jester Lisa, which turned into a hilariously competitive showdown that had everyone cheering from the sidelines.
More than the events, food, or fancy dress, the enduring magic of Vinegar Hill is its people. As one long-time attendee, Ryan James, told YOUR EX:
“This hill is a great leveller — no matter your background or your job, you have a place here. I’ve been coming for 11 years, and some of my closest friends are people I’d never meet in my day-to-day life.”
