Autumn Farm: 31 Summers of Connection in Golden Bay

Tucked away in the lush heart of Golden Bay, Autumn Farm began the new year by hosting its 31st annual Summer Camp, drawing nearly 100 attendees — mostly gay and bisexual men, but also welcoming queer-friendly folk, naturists, and pansexuals from around the globe. With international guests and students mingling with long-time regulars, it was another unforgettable week of connection, laughter, and sun-soaked freedom.

Autumn Farm, established in 1984, is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most unique queer accommodation venues — often described as a “queer utopia” and a true Garden of Eden for those who visit.

Clothing-optional, the Farm is a place where socialising happens over shared meals or a glass of wine in the famous bush bath under the stars. Facilities are communal, and the lifestyle is proudly eco-positive: composting toilets, solar hot water, on-site water sourced from the farm’s own well, and a dedicated wastewater treatment system. Sustainability is a way of life.

This year, the team hopes to transition the property to 100% solar power, ensuring another 31 years of low-impact summer fun.

Set across a lovingly maintained 3-acre garden, Autumn Farm offers a campground, lodge, rustic cabins, and dormitory, inviting guests to experience rural gay community at its best. You can cook for yourself, or opt into the $25 catered dinner (booking required). Visitors often spend their days exploring nearby beaches, rivers, and national parks — or simply soaking in the serenity of the property itself.
