ICE “Jokes” Spark Outrage Against Jeffree Star

Jeffree Star is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The makeup mogul and influencer is facing backlash after making insensitive jokes about US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a recent TikTok livestream, further fuelling criticism over his comments.

The incident occurred during a live session on Monday, where Star was joined by fellow influencers and interacted with a young Latino man who briefly entered the stream. When the man left the video abruptly, Star quipped:

“Huh. I’m just surprised they have red lights in the deportation centres,”
— a comment that visibly stunned the other participants.

Later in the same livestream, more guests joined in, and during what appeared to be light banter, Star added another ICE reference:

“I know what Jessica’s thinking. She’s like, I’m calling ICE.”

The remarks were quickly condemned by viewers, particularly within the Latino community, who accused Star of making light of a deeply serious and traumatising issue. Among those criticising Star was celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who posted a video recap of the stream.

“Whether you’re for or against the deportations, I don’t think this is a joking matter,” Hilton said. “I don’t find it funny.”

The timing of Star’s remarks has added fuel to the fire. Just a week earlier, ICE agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot Renee Good during a “targeted operation” as she attempted to flee the scene — raising even more concern over the appropriateness of Star’s jokes.

One of the influencers present during the livestream, Jessica Dimon, addressed the incident after being called out by her own followers for not responding in real time.

“I take full accountability for not speaking up, standing up, or responding as I should have,” she wrote in a TikTok story. “I am 100% against ICE and everything ICE is doing. I apologise to anyone I have hurt by not defending.”

Despite the backlash, Star has remained defiant. Responding to criticism in the comment section of a TikTok post, he wrote:

“I absolutely do not side with anyone; it was a dark humour joke on a livestream for five seconds.”

In a separate comment, Star doubled down further:

“Why would I care? People can joke about whatever they want.”

These latest comments follow weeks of controversial statements by Star, including transphobic views expressed on a podcast in November. In that interview, he claimed to be “not gay” but “just open and very me,” and went on to advocate for the removal of the “Q” and “T” from the LGBTQ+ acronym. He also questioned gender identity in children, stating:

“Why are we encouraging our kids to be a different gender and feed them false information when they’re so young?”

As the backlash mounts, it’s clear that many fans and members of the LGBTQ+ and Latino communities are no longer willing to excuse Star’s behaviour as just “dark humour”.
