After a night of confidence, community spirit and plenty of cheek, Matt McVeigh has officially been crowned Mr Bear New Zealand 2026, taking home the sash in front of a packed and passionate crowd.
A familiar face within Auckland’s bear scene, Matt impressed judges and audiences alike with his warmth, humour and clear commitment to giving back. Born in the UK and now proudly calling Aotearoa home, his win marks a celebration of both chosen family and the inclusive spirit that defines the bear community.
When he first entered the competition, Matt spoke openly about what the title meant to him — and that vision hasn’t changed.
“If I were crowned Mr Bear New Zealand, I’d be the kind of titleholder who’s fun, approachable, and a little cheeky,” he said ahead of the event. “I’d celebrate our community’s confidence, inclusivity, and camaraderie… and I wouldn’t shy away from a little playful trouble.”
That blend of charm and purpose was on full display throughout the competition, culminating in a winning night that saw Matt embraced by supporters, fellow contestants and long-time community members.
Matt has also been clear about using the platform for advocacy, particularly at a time when visibility matters more than ever.
“With the current state of the world, where LGBT+ rights are under attack, visibility, community, and confidence are more important than ever,” he previously shared. “I’d want to use this platform to be an advocate by speaking up, raising awareness, and showing solidarity for everyone in our community.”
As part of his Mr Bear journey, Matt is proudly supporting RainbowYOUTH, recognising the vital work the organisation does for queer and gender-diverse young people across Aotearoa.
Having spent the past decade immersed in Auckland’s bear community, Matt has often described the scene as central to his own confidence and sense of belonging — something he now hopes to pay forward.
“There’s nothing quite like a big, burly bear hug,” he joked during his campaign, “and this community has always been about acceptance, support, and a bit of mischief.”
As Mr Bear New Zealand 2026, Matt will now step into a role that extends far beyond the stage — representing the community at events, supporting charitable causes, and continuing to champion inclusion, equality and connection.
From baby bear beginnings to crowned king, Matt McVeigh’s win is being celebrated as one rooted in heart, humour and genuine community pride.
