A new global survey suggests that more than half of adults are open to exploring sexual experiences involving artificial intelligence, highlighting the growing role AI is beginning to play in people’s intimate lives.
The research, conducted by the “AI-lationships” platform Joi AI, surveyed 25,000 adults and found that 55 per cent of respondents said they would be open to sexually experimenting with AI or find the idea appealing.
The results point to a rising curiosity about how emerging technologies could shape relationships, intimacy and sexual expression.
AI and Modern Relationships
According to the data shared by the platform, 45 per cent of participants said the idea of involving an AI “third” in a threesome scenario with a partner was appealing.
Meanwhile, 61 per cent of respondents said they felt more comfortable sharing their sexual desires with AI than with another person, suggesting that some users view AI as a judgement-free space for exploring personal interests.
The survey also found that 61 per cent of participants believed interacting with AI had helped them discover new kinks or sexual preferences they had not previously considered.
Ethical Concerns Around AI
Despite the growing interest, the use of AI in sexual or intimate contexts continues to raise serious ethical and safety concerns.
Recently, social media platform X faced widespread criticism after reports that its AI chatbot Grok was being used to generate sexualised images, including attempts to digitally undress people without their consent and create inappropriate content involving minors.
In response, platform owner Elon Musk stated that anyone using Grok to generate illegal content would face the same consequences as someone uploading illegal material.
X’s official Safety account later confirmed that the platform takes action against illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, by removing the content, suspending accounts and cooperating with law enforcement agencies where necessary.
Wider AI Risks
The controversy highlights broader concerns about the rapid expansion of AI technologies.
Experts have increasingly warned that AI tools can contribute to misinformation, amplify existing biases online and be misused in ways that raise serious ethical and legal challenges.
As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life — including relationships and sexuality — regulators and technology companies are continuing to grapple with how to balance innovation with privacy, safety and accountability.
