Glee star Chris Colfer has shared new details about his upcoming adult novel, teasing a bold and unexpected shift in his writing style ahead of its release next year.
The actor and author, who rose to fame in 2009 as Kurt Hummel on the hit series, revealed that his latest project will take a much darker — and more mature — direction than his previous work.
Colfer became a household name through his acclaimed portrayal of Kurt, with fans embracing both the character and his on-screen romance with Blaine, played by Darren Criss. Since Glee concluded in 2015, he has focused on building a successful career as a writer, particularly in the young adult space.
His bibliography includes the popular The Land of Stories series and its companion books, as well as the more recent Roswell Johnson titles. However, his next release marks a clear departure from those earlier works.
Speaking to OUT at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars viewing party, Colfer confirmed he is currently working on his first adult novel.
“I’m currently writing my very first adult novel,” he said. “It’s really smutty, really creepy, very gay. I will be cancelled when it comes out. It’s been nice knowing you,” he joked, adding that the story draws from his own experiences.
“It’s very spooky and it’s based on an experience I had,” he explained.
Colfer also shared his enthusiasm for other queer stories gaining popularity, including Heated Rivalry, praising both its storytelling and its viral appeal.
“Oh my god, bless Heated Rivalry… talk about God’s blessing,” he said, before adding with humour: “Oh my, those butts!”
“I don’t know how many surgeries it would take for me to look like that, but I’m willing to find out!” he joked. “Is that too much to ask for? Even AI couldn’t give me an ass like that. It’s extraordinary!”
In addition to his upcoming novel, Colfer revealed that an on-screen adaptation of The Land of Stories is currently in development with Warner Bros.
His new adult novel is expected to be released in 2027.
