Ponsonby hospitality icon Nathan ‘Nay Nay’ Andrews remembered with love


Nathan Nutanan Andrews, known as Nay Nay, is remembered as a beloved SPQR host, Ponsonby icon and cherished member of Aotearoa’s rainbow community.

Nutanan Nathan Andrews, known affectionately to many as Nay Nay, is being remembered as a beloved Ponsonby hospitality icon, a cherished whānau member, and a bright presence in Aotearoa’s rainbow community.

Nathan, who lived from 1977 to 2026, was best known to many Aucklanders through his years as a host at Ponsonby Road’s legendary restaurant SPQR. Warm, witty and full of life, he became synonymous with the venue and with Ponsonby itself.

For countless diners, friends, rainbow community members and New Zealand notables, Nathan was more than a familiar face, he was part of the fabric of Ponsonby. His joyful energy, infectious laugh and generous spirit left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of being served by him, working alongside him, or simply sharing space with him.

On behalf of the Andrews and his whānau, Nathan’s family shared the news of his passing following a private battle with illness.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Nathan/Nutana Andrews following a brave and private battle with illness.”

Nathan was the beloved son of the late Mary and Noel Andrews, cherished brother to Matiu and the late John Boy, adored uncle to Shannah, Ashley, Ruby, Keisha, Kauri and Trinity, and a much-loved cousin and friend to many.

Tributes have flowed for Nathan from across the rainbow community, Ponsonby hospitality circles and wider Aotearoa.

Steven Oates wrote: “We will miss him and his spirt. We really was loved by everyone.”

Rob Sykes shared: “Moe mai rā e Nay Nay. Auē te mamae.”

Lewis Rowe remembered Nathan as “A true legend of Ponsonby Road, with an amazing laugh, wit and warmth.”

Zach McGrath described him simply as a “True Ponsonby Icon,” while Geoffrey Dickman said he was “So full of love, life and laughter.”

Actor Joel Tobeck paid tribute, saying: “He was such a bundle of energy and fun!”

Jack Joseph wrote: “such a lovely guy, what a loss.”

Rocco Andrew Gelonese remembered Nathan as someone who “was always a bright spark and beautiful soul.”

MP Shanan Halbert shared: “Arohanui.”

Taane Mete wrote: “Moemoea beauty! A gentle soul with the biggest heart. Always a joy to be in your presence.”

Singer Megan Alatini recalled Nathan’s warmth and connection to SPQR, saying: “Nutana was such a great, fun human – trained my daughter Tonica at SPQR and looked after us truebliss girls so beautifully!!”

Drag queen Miss Ribena wrote: “he was just the best.”

Lisa Prager described Nathan as “A sweet being of great Joy & Light that touched many of us on his way through! Arohanui.”

Urge Events’ Paul Heard also paid tribute, saying Nathan “Was always a charmer and an icon of Ponsonby hospitality.”

From the late afternoon of Tuesday 9 June, Nutana will be lying at his home at Unit 5, 43 Woodward Road, Mt Albert, Auckland. Family and friends are welcome to come and pay their respects from then until the evening of Wednesday 10 June.

A casual service for Nathan will be held on Wednesday 10 June, with the time to be confirmed.

On Thursday 11 June, after a brief stop at his beloved Nana’s at 113 Pukepoto Road, Kaitaia, around 8.30am, Nutana will return home to Potahi Marae, Te Kao, arriving at 11am.

Further details will be provided regarding his time at Potahi Marae, including services on Friday 12 June, when Nutana will be laid to rest.

A warm welcome is extended to all whānau and friends who wish to pay their respects to Nutana.
