Frankie A. Rodriguez and Joe Serafini have taken their High School Musical romance from the screen to real life — and now all the way to an engagement.
The actors, who met while starring as couple Carlos Rodriguez and Seb Matthew-Smith in Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, announced the happy news on Instagram on Friday, 7 August.
Rodriguez shared a series of photographs showing the couple together in a park, proudly displaying rings on their left hands.
The announcement itself was wonderfully straightforward.
“engaged! 💍💖🥂” Rodriguez captioned the post.
Serafini responded with a collection of smiling face-with-hearts emojis, while their former Wildcats castmates rapidly filled the comments with congratulations.
Wildcats celebrate the happy couple
Among those celebrating was Matt Cornett, who played E.J. Caswell on the Disney+ series.
“YES YES YES YES YES. GREATEST COUPLE OF ALL TIME,” Cornett wrote.
Joshua Bassett, who starred as Ricky Bowen, responded with an appropriately restrained: “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.”
Series creator and openly gay showrunner Tim Federle offered perhaps the most concise assessment of the occasion, writing: “nature is healing” alongside a red heart.
Dara Reneé, who played Kourtney Greene, was equally thrilled.
“I’VE BEEN PRAYING FOR THIS MOMENT!! LOVE YALL SO MUCH!!!!” she wrote.
Julia Lester, who portrayed Ashlyn Caswell, added: “THOSE ARE LITERALLY MY FAVORITE PPL ON THE PLANET REALLY TRULY.”
Other members of the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series family also joined the celebrations, including Sofia Wylie and Larry Saperstein, while the official Disney+ account commented: “We couldn’t be happier for you two!”
Fans were predictably emotional too.

Another summed up the wonderfully queer trajectory of the Disney+ series by commenting: “the absolute power of hsmtmts to bring upon queer love.”
From on-screen boyfriends to real-life love
Rodriguez and Serafini met through High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which premiered alongside the launch of Disney+ in 2019 and ran for four seasons before concluding in 2023.
Rodriguez played Carlos, the enthusiastic student choreographer at East High, while Serafini played Seb, a sweet-natured fellow student who became Carlos’ boyfriend.
Their fictional romance soon had a real-life counterpart.
By 2021, Rodriguez and Serafini were openly discussing the fact that they were dating away from the cameras as well as playing a couple on screen. Rodriguez is gay, while Serafini has publicly identified as bisexual.
Their relationship also became part of one of the programme’s most significant LGBTQ+ moments.
In the second season, Carlos performed In a Heartbeat for Seb, a song widely described at the time as Disney’s first LGBTQ+ love song.
The number was particularly meaningful because it treated their romance with the same sincerity and sweeping Disney sentiment traditionally afforded to heterosexual couples.
Speaking about Carlos and Seb as the series came to an end, Serafini reflected on the importance of allowing the relationship simply to exist without constantly treating its queerness as a storyline requiring explanation.
“It’s hard to wrap your heads around, even four years into these characters, just the power of their existence on the screen to people watching at home,” he said.
“Yeah, it’s just been so incredible and to have them exist in this natural, not pushed or forced way. I mean, Seb and Carlos are just in a relationship,” he added. “That’s all it really is.”
And they even kept the piano
Rodriguez and Serafini’s connection to the show did not disappear when filming ended.
The couple managed to take home one particularly enormous souvenir: the rehearsal-room piano used throughout the series.
“I turned to Joe and said, ‘you should ask for the piano’ and he was like, ‘no, no, no they’ll never do it,’” Rodriguez recalled.
“I said ‘just ask for it’ and he asked Tim Ferderle, our showrunner, for the piano and two weeks after we wrapped the piano showed up at our door.”
The instrument subsequently found a home in the apartment the couple shared.
“We hope to have it in a house someday where we can have the cast over and like everyone can play it,” Serafini said.
The piano carried particular sentimental value because Serafini had regularly used instruments on set to bring the cast together for informal singalongs between takes.
“Joe was always like ‘The Piano Man,’” Rodriguez said.
“So I think anytime cameras went down and there was a piano in the room and Joe was able to bring everybody together for, like, a big ‘ol singing moment. Those were always the best because everybody is so amazing, so the fact that they were just willing to do it for free — it was great.”
Now that dream of one day having the piano in a house where their old castmates can gather feels just a little more romantic.
A Disney love story that became real
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series became notable during its four-season run for the ease with which queer characters and relationships existed alongside the rest of East High’s teenage dramas.
Its final season continued that representation, including Seb coming out to his father and the relationship between Carlos and Seb gaining increased visibility.
For Rodriguez and Serafini, however, the programme created something even more enduring.
They arrived on set as actors playing two young men falling in love.
They left as a real-life couple, carrying an East High piano with them.
And now, several years after the Wildcats took their final bow, they are getting married.
For once, the Disney ending really did come true.
