We may not yet have had the pleasure of an “out” All Black, but one of the top referees in the World is in Aotearoa at the moment. He’s from Wales, his name is Nigel Owens and he’s openly gay.
He refereed the first test against England on their current tour and will be an assistant referee for the third test against the All Blacks this Saturday in Hamilton.
The 42 year old has officiated at test match level since 2005 and has officiated at two Rugby World Cups.

Owens is the Wales Rugby Union’s Referees Academy coach and when he has time dabbles in television commentary and stand-up comedy.
