The last month has been an eye opener. The fantastic LYC Big Gay Out kicked off the party season, the religious protesters that once darkened this event are now a thing of the past, leaving us free to vent our frustrations at the Prime Minister instead! A week later I awoke to a succession of Facebook status’ assuring me that homophobia still existed, backed by an image of a vandalised Ponsonby Road ‘GAYTM’.

A few days later “Queers Against Injustice” outed themselves as the culprits. Auckland’s homophobes, it would seem, have been happy for the GAYTMs to sparkle in all their glory. Then, for the second year in a row, the Pride Parade was protested, not by those outside of our community but those within it.  With less outsiders attacking us, are we all now turning on each other?  As our cover girl Madonna says “the way we’re going to change the world or ultimately feel joy is through unity.” Let’s break bread, not arms, and cover the world in pink (but not paint)!
