Queenstown Rotary Club, a famously conservative kiwi institution, have elected a local transwoman as president.

Rotary have turned over a new leaf with the election of new president Monica Mulholland, who began living publicly as a woman earlier this year. She has expressed that she has felt overwhelmed by the election and says that her Queenstown club are a credit to New Zealand.

She says that in spite of Rotary being a largely conservative group, she “got flowers and phone calls and emails. The response was amazing.”

“Rotary clubs are mostly white older folks, lots of men, and you would think they would be really conservative,” says Monica.

Monica says that she thinks it is very important to have transgender people in positions of leadership in New Zealand and is very happy to assume her Presidential position in July.
