“The statement that New Zealand Police is a racist organisation is directly at odds with the core values we uphold, particularly diversity, professionalism, respect and commitment to Maori and the Treaty.” An NZ Police spokesperson has said.
“We strive to be a fair, impartial and bias-free police service, and we are continually on a journey to ensure we achieve this.
Police for a long time have recognised that more needs to be done to address the over-representation of Māori in crime statistics.
Police are working hard to do what they can to lower offending and reoffending, and we have set ourselves a target to reduce Maori reoffending by 25% by 2025.
We have a number of initiatives supporting this target such as our Turning of the Tide strategy and our iwi partnerships.”
