Robert Barry takes the new Mazda 3 Limited from North Harbour Mazda out for a spin and finds himself ‘as one’ with the road.

Loosely translated the Japanese phrase Jinba Ittai means “when horse and rider become as one.” Since the launch of the first-generation MX-5 in 1989, it has become a cornerstone of Mazda’s design and engineering philosophy.

As you glide into the leather upholstery of the all-new Mazda 3 Limited hatch, you do immediately feel at one with the car. The interior ergonomics are excellent, and it’s easy to personalise a comfortable driving position while enjoying the seat heaters on a chilly morning.

The quality of the all-new Mazda3’s interior design and finish is on par, if not better, than some luxury brands.  Information on the vehicle’s speed and the posted speed limit is relayed to the driver by the Head-Up Active Driving Display, while the LED instrument panel provides all other necessary data.

Handily positioned in the centre of the dash is the new MazdaConnect Infotainment System incorporating Apple Car Play and Android Auto, which is easily navigated by the Commander Control rotary knob on the centre console.

A premium 12-speaker Bose audio system provides crisp clear sound, and the Limited comes standard with i-Activsense safety technologies including Cruising & Traffic Support, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Driving Monitoring, and Adaptive LED Headlights which must be seen to be appreciated!

Once on the road the real sense of Jinba Ittai envelopes you because this is a car that’s equally at home in the urban crawl as it is on a lovely piece of winding road, and it moves seamlessly from one to the other.

The Limited hatch has sharply responsive steering, a freely revving 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine allied to a quick-shifting 6-speed auto gearbox, and a brilliantly sporty drive that leaves you stirred but not shaken.

Mazda’s new catchphrase for the all-new Mazda3 is Drive Beautifully, and that it does in every sense.
