Anti-LGBTQ+ Republican congressman Madison Cawthorn has failed in his bid to be re-elected following a leaked homoerotic video of him and another man.

The North Carolina congressman who became well known for his anti-LGBTQ+ stance was once the youngest freshman in Congress. However, he lost his party’s support, being edged out of North Carolina’s 11th District on Tuesday the 17th of May in the Republican primary.

Conceding defeat to Chuck Edwards, a three-term state senator, Cawthorn lost by just 1,500 votes.

“Congratulations to [Chuck Edwards] on securing the nomination tonight,” Cawthorn tweeted.

“It’s time for the NC-11 GOP to rally behind the Republican ticket to defeat the Democrats’ nominee this November.”

Cawthorn, who describes himself as a Christian and a constitutional conservative, soon found himself being labelled a hypocrite by many who highlighted the irony of engaging in a simulated sex act with another man while at the same time speaking out against LGBTQ+ rights.

“Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny. We were acting foolish and joking. That’s it. I’m NOT backing down,” Cawthorn tweeted after the video surfaced on the 5th of May.

While claiming the nude act was simply a joke, a second video was then published showing one of Cawthorn’s cousins, a member of his staff, grabbing his crotch.

According to Rolling Stone, Cawthorn was also charged twice with carrying a loaded firearm in an airport, accused of being sexually and verbally aggressive towards women and accused of insider trading, leaving Trump reportedly unimpressed.
