Former President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his controversial stance on trans issues and promised to reverse recent steps made by the Biden administration to protect Trans rights.

Trump, who is known for his critical views on transgender rights during his presidency, made the comments during an interview on the Philadelphia-based radio talk show Kayal & Company on Friday, 10 May.

“The world is like a cuckoo’s nest right now,” Trump commented, referencing his perspective on the current administration’s policies.

Trump went on and criticised the Biden administration’s recent actions to protect trans and non-binary students, including policies that respect students’ pronouns and allow them to use restrooms that align with their gender identity. He promised, “We’re gonna end it on day one … the whole thing is crazy,” echoing the anti-trans rhetoric that characterised his previous term.

Trump’s comments were made shortly after the Biden administration finalised new anti-discrimination protections under Title IX, set to take effect on 1 August. These protections aim to safeguard individuals in public schools from sex-based discrimination and harassment and also strengthen the rights of LGBTQ+ students and victims of campus sexual assault.

Trump, who has made his opposition to LGBTQ+ rights a cornerstone of his platform, has also proposed banning gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth and advocated for a federal law to recognise only two genders.

His record during his 2017-2021 term in office includes several actions against LGBTQ+ rights, such as banning transgender individuals from serving openly in the military, supporting legal discrimination against queer people, and reversing Obama-era protections for transgender Americans under the Affordable Care Act.
