Thousands marched in Buenos Aires for the annual LGBTQ+ Pride event on Saturday, the 2nd of November, calling out the austerity measures of President Javier Milei’s government, which many view as being discriminatory.

Moving under the banner “There is no freedom without rights,” Marchers gathered at Plaza de Mayo before parading down the main boulevard, demanding a comprehensive trans law and anti-discrimination protections.

Amid music and celebrations, participants voiced concerns over budget cuts impacting HIV treatment, reproductive rights, and a perceived lack of support from the government. The crowd also urged lawmakers to pass a nationwide anti-discrimination law.

Since taking office, President Milei has faced criticism from LGBTQ+ groups for dissolving the Ministry of Women, Gender & Diversity, as well as the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI). “The government repeatedly insults people of diversity without hesitation,” LGBTQ activist Lucas Gutiérrez stated.

In August, Justice Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona expressed opposition to recognising sexual identities that diverge from biological norms, a stance widely criticised across the political spectrum. The Federación Argentina LGBTQ+ rebuked his remarks, stating that his role should focus on protecting human rights, not infringing upon them.

Adding to activists’ concerns, the group Frente por la Salud de Personas con VIH, hepatitis y tuberculosis reported that Milei’s proposed 2025 budget, currently before Congress, includes a 76% cut in funding for HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis treatments. They report that cuts have already resulted in shortages of testing supplies, condoms, and essential medications.
