Auckland has been named as one of the final three cities in the running to host the Gay Games 2030, a globally significant LGBTQI+ sports and cultural event. Competing with Perth, and Denver, Auckland’s bid underscores its potential to host this celebration of inclusivity, diversity, and athletic achievement.
The Gay Games is renowned for bringing together thousands of participants from all skill levels and backgrounds, regardless of sexual orientation. Its mission is to promote inclusion and encourage participation in sport while celebrating cultural diversity.
The economic impact of the Games is equally impressive. When hosted in Paris in 2018, the event generated nearly $204 million, including $124 million in direct contributions to the local economy.
The 10-day festival combines athletic competitions like rugby, swimming, and martial arts with cultural highlights, including culinary festivals, art exhibitions, and workshops.
Angus McDougall from the Auckland bid team expressed excitement about being named a finalist. “This milestone brings us closer to hosting an event that will unite communities, celebrate our vibrant LGBTQIA+ whānau, and showcase Auckland’s stunning waterfront, breathtaking landscapes, and unique cultural identity to the world,” he said.
Speaking with YOUR ex, Tux Hika, a Rainbow Games Federation Delegate, highlighted the broader significance of this achievement saying, “This success has real potential to enable local and central government to throw their full weight behind developing Rainbow communities’ inclusion and participation in sport through the legacy of Rainbow Games.”
The momentum from Auckland’s selection as a finalist also bolsters the ongoing efforts of the Rainbow Games. “This will give the Rainbow Games board and management a fantastic goal to strive for as we grow the Rainbow Games in 2026 and 2028,” Hika added.
“Participants in the Rainbow Games will be able to play and practice in sports ready, aiming high in the medal tally against the international competitions the Gay Games will bring.”
Since its inception in San Francisco in 1982, the Gay Games has been a beacon of inclusivity, occurring every four years. The most recent Games, co-hosted by Guadalajara, Mexico, and Hong Kong in 2023, showcased resilience in the face of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The winning host city for the 2030 Games will be announced in October 2025 following thorough evaluations of Auckland, Perth, and Denver by the Federation of Gay Games.
Earlier this year, Auckland hosted the inaugural Rainbow Games, attracting over 650 participants from 21 countries across 12 sports. The government’s Major Events Fund has committed $2.25 million to support the Rainbow Games in 2024, 2026, and 2028, further demonstrating New Zealand’s dedication to fostering inclusivity.
If Auckland’s bid is successful, the Gay Games 2030 will amplify the city’s global reputation as a leader in celebrating diversity and uniting communities through sport and culture.
