At a national prayer service marking the beginning of his second term, US President Donald Trump was urged by a religious leader to show compassion and mercy towards vulnerable communities.

During the Interfaith Service of Prayer for the Nation at Washington’s National Cathedral, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde made a heartfelt plea, addressing concerns about the fears faced by many Americans under Trump’s administration.

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” Bishop Budde said, speaking directly as Mr Trump sat in the front row of the sanctuary.

She also advocated for the rights of undocumented immigrants, emphasising their contributions to society.

“They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she stated. “They pay taxes and are good neighbours. They are faithful members of our churches, mosques and synagogues, gurdwaras, and temples.”
