News reporters quickly shut down a man who bizarrely claimed that the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles were caused by the LGBTQ+ community.
The fires, which continue to ravage northern LA, have destroyed over 1,000 homes and claimed at least 10 lives. Authorities have evacuated nearly 180,000 residents as the fires spread rapidly, fuelled by strong winds. The Palisades fire in Malibu alone has scorched nearly 20,000 acres.
As journalists, officials, and residents search for explanations, a man made the startling comment during a live broadcast on Fox News affiliate KTTV on Thursday (9 January). The passer-by stated, “Why is there a fire happening right now? You’re the news, you’re supposed to know.” He then added, “I think it’s all the gay people in LA.”
The reporters responded with visible discomfort, walking away and calling his remarks unacceptable. The incident, captured during the live broadcast, quickly went viral, sparking criticism online.
A clip of the exchange was shared on Twitter, where one user commented:
“LA newscasters: ‘We don’t know how the fires started.’
Random guy: ‘I think it’s all the gay people in LA.’ 🤣
I just happened to see this live on YouTube just now.”
Although the claim is clearly baseless, it reflects a disturbing narrative perpetuated by some right-wing commentators. Fox News host Jesse Watters has controversially suggested that the policies of LGBTQ+ fire department chief Kristin Crowley contributed to the fires’ destructive impact. Watters claimed the wildfires symbolised California’s supposed self-destruction.
