Auckland’s Rainbow community is fighting back against Destiny Church, organising a large-scale protest to challenge the group’s continued attacks on LGBTQ+ New Zealanders.

The Defying Destiny: Day of Queer Power protest will take place on Sunday, 23 February, at 2pm at the Albert Park Rotunda.

The protest follows an escalation of anti-LGBTQ+ actions from Destiny Church, including blocking the Auckland Rainbow Parade and a shocking invasion of a Rainbow Storytime Event.

Organised by People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA), this protest aims to show Destiny Church that their intimidation tactics will not succeed. Organisers say the event will be peaceful but unapologetic, demonstrating the strength of the queer community and sending a clear message: ‘we will not be erased.’

A Peaceful Protest with a Powerful Message

The event will feature speeches from:

  • Sharon Hawke (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust)
  • Dr Emmy Rākete (PAPA)
  • Chlöe Swarbrick (Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand)
  • Rev Mua Strickson-Pua (Tagata Pasifika Resource Centre)
  • Eru Kapa-Kingi (Toitū Te Tiriti)
  • Medulla Oblongata

With these voices leading the charge, the protest will not only condemn Destiny Church’s actions but also demand real accountability from the government.

Key Demands

Protest organisers are calling for:

  • The government to dismantle Destiny Church’s organisational structure, including deregistering its charities.
  • Government agencies to cut all ties with Destiny Church front groups like Man Up, ensuring no public resources are directed toward the church’s harmful activities.
  • A clear message to Destiny Church: Queer people and their allies will not be pushed back into the closet, nor will they tolerate violence and hate without resistance.

Safety & Community Solidarity

Recognising the potential for confrontation, organisers say trained volunteers will be present as marshals, with strategies to keep participants protected. Attendees are encouraged to:
✅ Travel in pairs or groups
✅ Bring water, masks, and sun protection
✅ Seek out marshals if they need assistance

The protest is open to ‘anyone who stands against the hate and violence Destiny Church has perpetuated.’ Attendees are encouraged to spread the word and bring friends, especially those who may feel alienated or unheard.

Standing Strong Against Hate

The Defying Destiny: Day of Queer Power protest is more than just a response—it’s a statement that queer New Zealanders will not be silenced. Destiny Church represents only a small, vocal minority. The majority of New Zealanders believe in inclusivity, respect, and the right for everyone to live freely and safely.
