Pete Buttigieg Says Political Attack Crossed A Line: “Do Not Mess With Someone’s Kids”

Pete Buttigieg has revealed a deeply distressing ordeal that saw him temporarily separated from his young children following what authorities later determined was a false report.

The former United States Secretary of Transportation described the experience as “the darkest hours of my life” in a lengthy post on Substack, detailing how an anonymous allegation triggered an investigation involving police and child protection authorities.

The incident has prompted renewed concern about the targeting of LGBTQIA+ families and public figures, with Buttigieg vowing to explore any legal options available against those responsible.

Buttigieg speaks out after family targeted

Buttigieg, who made history as the first openly gay Cabinet secretary confirmed by the US Senate, said the incident began when a police officer and Child Protective Services worker arrived at his family home.

The visit centred on an allegation involving Buttigieg and the four-year-old twins he shares with husband Chasten Buttigieg.

However, authorities initially refused to disclose the nature of the complaint.

According to Buttigieg, he was told he could not be alone with his children until they underwent forensic interviews the following day.

“The twenty-four hours until they returned are among the darkest hours of my life,” he wrote.

The former presidential candidate said he spent the night fearing the unknown while his children were questioned by strangers without either parent present.

“I tried to get my head around the idea that I had been accused of something so serious that I couldn’t be alone around my own children,” he wrote.

When investigators finally revealed the allegation, Buttigieg said it stemmed from an anonymous caller who claimed a woman had met him years earlier in Alabama, where he allegedly confessed to “unspeakable violent crimes”.

The claim quickly unravelled.

“He asked if I had been to the town where the woman claimed she had met me. I have not,” Buttigieg wrote.

He said investigators informed him that nothing uncovered during the children’s interviews substantiated the allegation.

“The officer made clear that he believed this was politically motivated, and said it would not be referred to a prosecutor.”

“They are four years old. Four.”

The ordeal struck particularly hard because it involved the couple’s children, whom Buttigieg and his husband adopted in 2021.

“My in-laws had to explain to my children, whom we have taught to avoid talking to strangers, that they would need to have a conversation, one at a time and for nearly an hour each, in a place they’d never been, with adults they did not know,” Buttigieg wrote.

“I cannot describe the mix of rage and sadness that I feel at the idea that someone brought our children into this.”

“They are four years old. Four.”

The incident comes amid a broader political climate in which LGBTQIA+ families have increasingly been targeted in US culture-war debates.

Buttigieg has long faced anti-LGBTQIA+ attacks as one of the country’s most prominent openly gay political figures. He described the false report as a form of political harassment, comparing it to “swatting” through the child welfare system.

Buttigieg vows to pursue legal options

Despite becoming a major LGBTQIA+ political figure in recent years, Buttigieg said this latest attack crossed a line.

“I don’t know how much we can do about it, but so help me God, if there is any way to press civil or criminal charges over this, we will,” he wrote.

“Not just for our own sakes but to draw a line that I thought everyone already recognized: do not mess with someone’s kids.”

Michigan State Police confirmed the report was determined to be false, warning that false reports divert police and Child Protective Services workers away from legitimate emergencies and vulnerable families.

For Buttigieg, the ordeal was not just another political attack. It was an intrusion into the life of his family, and one that placed his children at the centre of a malicious allegation.
