Orville Peck has made Playgirl history, becoming the first openly gay singer to grace the iconic magazine’s cover — and yes, the mask stays on while almost everything else comes off.
The country star appears nude in a new photo spread shot by Anna Garbowska, serving cowboy fantasy, sculpted physique and plenty of carefully placed modesty.
It is not Peck’s first time baring almost all for a magazine, but this latest shoot leans heavily into the tension that has always defined his image: mystery, masculinity and queerness.
‘What’s Sexier Than A Little Bit Of Rebellion?’
In the accompanying interview, Peck reflects on why cowboy imagery has always appealed to him as a gay man.
“Anything that plays with the OG trope of male strippers and images of what masculinity is supposed to be, tied to heterosexuality, is sexy,” he tells Playgirl.
He also points out something queer audiences have long known: cowboys have never belonged exclusively to straight culture.
“There is a reality of gay cowboys in the world and in history,” Peck says, adding that the cowboy remains one of the strongest symbols of traditional masculinity.
His conclusion?
“What’s sexier than a little bit of rebellion?”
And, naturally, chaps.
“If you don’t think that’s gay I don’t know what to tell you.”
Queering The Cowboy
Peck has spent much of his career playing with exactly that contradiction.
His music draws heavily from classic country traditions, while his visual identity combines cowboy iconography with masks, sequins, camp and openly gay storytelling.
That has helped make him one of the most recognisable queer figures in contemporary country music.
His Playgirl shoot pushes that image even further, taking an archetype traditionally associated with rugged heterosexual masculinity and making the queer subtext extremely difficult to miss.
The mask, meanwhile, remains.
Some mysteries are sacred.
Mule Is Coming
The timing of the shoot also coincides with a major new chapter in Peck’s music career.
His fourth studio album, Mule, is due on 18 September.
The record is described as one of his most personal projects yet, tracing a period shaped by addiction, sobriety, love, loss and rebuilding.
Rather than simply leaning into the glamour of the cowboy persona, Mule appears set to expose considerably more emotionally than even this Playgirl shoot does physically.
From Country Star To Street Fighter
Peck is also heading to the big screen.
He will play Vega in the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie — a casting choice that feels almost suspiciously perfect.
Vega is known for fighting behind a mask and possessing an extremely high opinion of his own beauty.

Between a new album, a major movie role and a historic nude magazine cover, 2026 is proving to be a particularly busy year for the queer country star.
And if the Playgirl photos are anything to go by, Peck is not exactly easing into it quietly.
