Volunteers Needed for Christchurch’s Colourful Rainbow Ride Event

Christchurch residents are being invited to take part in – or help support – one of the city’s most colourful community cycling events, with organisers of Rainbow Ride 2026 calling for both riders and volunteers.

Now entering its third year, Rainbow Ride will once again see cyclists form a single “rainbow snake” weaving through Ōtautahi in a celebration of diversity, fitness, sustainability and Christchurch’s growing bike-friendly culture.

The 40-minute paced ride will begin in Hagley Park before following a designated route through the park and the central city. Participants will then finish at the Ōtautahi Pride Market, where celebrations will continue and prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed bike and the most memorable marshal location.

Organisers hope to double the scale of previous rides, with space for up to 120 riders representing the 12 colours of the Progress Pride Flag.

Rainbow Ride’s mission is to help build a more inclusive, sustainable and bike-friendly Christchurch by celebrating diversity, encouraging active transport and creating joyful, visible spaces for the rainbow community and its allies.

This year also marks the first time the event will give back directly to local organisations. A $10 registration fee from each rider will contribute to a shared fundraising pool supporting two grassroots initiatives: Rainbow Hub Ōtautahi, a developing home for local rainbow organisations, and RAD Bikes. Through the donation, RAD Bikes will be able to gift up to eight sets of bikes, helmets and locks to members of the rainbow community who need them.

Community members interested in receiving one of these bike sets can contact organisers via rainbowridechch@gmail.com.

To take part in Rainbow Ride 2026, participants can visit https://www.rainbowride.org.nz/ to learn more about the event and register for one of two roles.

Those wishing to ride can sign up for one of the available colour groups, with space for up to 10 cyclists in each of the 12 Pride colours. Riders are encouraged to dress themselves and decorate their bikes to match their chosen colour as closely as possible.

Sustainability is also part of the event’s ethos, with organisers encouraging participants to source outfits from op shops or recycled material stores such as Creative Junk. Friends, whānau and hoamahi are also encouraged to join in the ride.

Alongside riders, organisers are also seeking around 30 volunteer marshals to help keep both cyclists and the public safe along the 7km route through Hagley Park and the CBD.

Marshals will be stationed along the route to alert pedestrians, drivers and other cyclists that the ride is passing through. The volunteer role requires no more than a 30-minute shift on the morning of the event, plus attendance at a short induction session the week beforehand. Induction options will take place on Saturday 21 March at 10am and Monday 23 March at 5.30pm.

The role is free and open to anyone who wants to support the event without riding.

Organisers are also looking for a volunteer drone operator with experience capturing aerial footage. While spectators are encouraged to share photos and videos of the ride, aerial footage from key locations along the route would help document the colourful procession through the city.

Anyone with a drone and the skills to film from the air is encouraged to get in touch.

Residents can stay updated by following Rainbow Ride on social media. Organisers are encouraging the community to spread the word to help ensure the 2026 event fills Christchurch’s streets with colour while raising awareness and funds for important local causes.
