Christchurch Pride lifted the energy several notches this weekend as URGE arrived in Ōtautahi — and judging by the packed dancefloor at Exchange Christchurch, the city was absolutely ready for it.
Taking place on Saturday night, 14 March, the long-running party series turned XCHC into a vibrant, multi-room hub of music, connection and unapologetic queer joy. From the moment the doors opened, partygoers streamed inside — harnesses, mesh and masks in full effect — prepared to give themselves over to six hours of pounding beats and bodies moving together.
URGE has long stood for more than simply delivering a big night out. Since emerging in the late 1980s, the event has created space for people who have not always felt represented within mainstream gay nightlife — a space where different bodies, identities and forms of expression are not only welcomed, but celebrated.
That spirit was unmistakable on Saturday night.
On the decks, DJ Gregor, Division 4 and Everett Wayne crafted a soundtrack that built patiently from a slow-burning start into full-scale euphoria. By the height of the night, the room was dense with heat, rhythm and bass — the kind of shared release that only happens when a crowd feels genuinely safe, seen and at home.
URGE Events hosts dance parties across Aotearoa that celebrate all men’s shapes, sizes and identities, while also supporting LGBTQ+ causes, charities and local sport. Their next party is URGE Black at Wellington’s Vahalla on Saturday 11 April. CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!
