Britney Spears Enters Rehab After March DUI Arrest

Britney Spears has voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation facility for substance abuse, according to multiple US outlets, after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in California last month. Reuters and the Associated Press both reported on 13 April that Spears had entered treatment following the March incident, citing confirmation from her representative.

The singer is said to have entered an undisclosed facility in the US last week. People reported that Spears checked into treatment on 12 April and that her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, were a significant factor in encouraging her to seek help.

According to Reuters, Spears was arrested in Ventura County after California Highway Patrol officers stopped her for allegedly driving erratically at high speed. Officers suspected impairment from a combination of alcohol and drugs, and she was later booked into Ventura County Main Jail before being released. She is due to appear in court on 4 May.

The DUI arrest appears to have been a major turning point. People reported that those close to Spears had been urging her to enter rehab soon after the March 4 arrest, but that it took several weeks before she agreed. The same report said she was shaken by the experience and worried about the possibility of jail time.

One source quoted by People said her sons “were a big part of getting her to rehab”, while TMZ reported that people close to Spears felt she had reached “rock bottom”. TMZ also claimed that part of the motivation for entering treatment was the pending court case, although that appears to come from unnamed sources rather than an official statement.

A representative for Spears described the situation as serious, calling her actions “inexcusable” and expressing hope that treatment would mark a positive turning point. Reuters and the AP both reported that her team sees the decision to enter rehab as a meaningful step towards recovery.

This is not the first time Spears has sought treatment. The AP noted that she previously entered rehab in 2007 during a highly public period of personal crisis. People also reported that she spent more than three months in treatment in 2018. Spears later wrote about her life and struggles in her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me.

For now, Spears has not publicly commented in detail on the reported rehab stay. But with her court date approaching and concern continuing around her wellbeing, the decision to seek treatment appears to mark a significant moment in an already difficult year.
