New Zealand’s Marlborough region is set to host its inaugural Pride Wairau Festival, a vibrant 10-day celebration of diversity, inclusion, and community.
Pride Wairau |14 – 23 June 2024
Organised by passionate locals and supported by various community groups, this festival promises to be an unforgettable experience filled with a multitude of events, workshops, and gatherings. Among these, are five key events that embody the spirit of Pride Wairau:
Opening Ceremony
Starting the festival with respect for the land and the people who have come before us, the Opening Ceremony will be held at Market Place in the centre of Blenheim. This event will bring together community leaders, performers, and participants to celebrate the beginning of the festival. Expect a dawn karakia, relaxing live music, speeches and free coffee. This ceremony will set the tone for the days to come, fostering a sense of unity and excitement. The Opening Ceremony is free to attend and everyone is welcome.
Be There – Community Day
The Be There – Community Day is designed to engage the whole community in a day of fun, food, and connection. Held at MySpace, 18 Kinross Street, this event will feature family-friendly activities, live entertainment, food trucks and market stalls. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together, celebrate diversity, and have some fun! This day promises to be a highlight for families and friends, offering something for everyone. The Community Day is free to attend and all are welcome.
Supporting Rainbow Communities Workshop
Education and empowerment are at the heart of Pride Wairau. The Supporting Rainbow Communities Workshop is a pivotal event aimed at providing valuable insights and strategies for supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals. Hosted at Te Kahu o Waipuna – Blenheim Library by facilitators from InsideOUT Kōaro, this workshop will discuss key issues, share resources, and foster an environment of learning and support. Attendees will leave with a deeper awareness and practical tools to make a positive impact in their communities. This event only has 25 spaces.
Rainbow Rally
The Rainbow Rally is a dynamic and visible demonstration of solidarity and pride. Participants will gather for a walk along the Taylor River, showcasing the strength and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. This event is a celebration of identity and a powerful statement of love and acceptance. Everyone is invited to wave their flags, and express their pride openly and joyfully. Participants are encouraged to dress up, make signs, bring instruments and pets! This event is free and open to all.
Love Loud – Closing Party
As the festival draws to a close, the Love Loud – Closing Party will ensure that Pride Wairau ends on a high note. This event, held at Hotel d’Urville, will be a night of music, dancing, and celebration. With performances from talented Drag Queens and DJs, attendees can expect an electrifying atmosphere where love and pride are celebrated loudly and proudly. This closing party will be a fitting finale to a festival that has brought so much joy and unity to the community. This event is R18.
Other Independent Events
In addition to our five key events, the Pride Wairau Festival will feature a variety of independent events organised by local groups and businesses. These events will further enrich the festival experience, offering additional opportunities for engagement, learning, and celebration.
