Check out our photos from another huge Saturday night at Auckland’s Eagle Bar, taken by Peter Jennings on 9 May, with the K Road favourite once again doing what it does best: bringing together a great mix of locals, regulars and out-of-towners for drinks, laughs and a seriously good night out.
Tucked into the heart of Karangahape Road, Eagle has long held its place as one of the strip’s most reliable queer hangouts. Friendly, fun and gloriously unpretentious, it is the sort of bar where the night can begin with a quiet catch-up and very easily end with a dance, a singalong and a few new mates.
Auckland’s Eagle is very much its own thing. Unlike some of the overseas Eagle bars, it does not have the same identity as a leather bar or cruising venue. This one is simply a fun gay bar with a great atmosphere, an easy social energy and a crowd that feels genuinely mixed and welcoming.
There is a free jukebox, which means the soundtrack can swing from camp classics to full dancefloor chaos depending on who is feeding in the hits, and that sense of shared ownership adds to the mood.
Then there is the outdoor smoking area out the back, which is often just as lively as the bar itself. It has that familiar Eagle quality of becoming its own social orbit during the night — part catch-up zone, part flirtation station, part place to debrief before heading back in for another round.
