Gleeks, this is getting serious: Ryan Murphy has confirmed that a script for a new incarnation of Glee is officially written.
Just two months after revealing he was considering returning to McKinley High, Murphy says he has reunited with fellow Glee creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan to put the idea on paper.
He has also spoken with around 10 members of the original cast, and says their response has been enthusiastic.
“Well, funny you ask, ’cause I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight.
“So, we have a script. Brad, Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.”
That is the most concrete sign yet that a Glee revival could actually happen.
But before anyone starts practising their slushie throws, there is still one important caveat: the reboot has not been officially ordered.
Original Cast Are ‘Very Enthusiastic’
Murphy says he has already been talking with some of the people who helped turn Glee into a global phenomenon.
“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members,” he said.
“It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
None of those cast members has been confirmed publicly, and Murphy says they have not actually seen the script yet.
“Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know, we’ll see,” he said.
Murphy also suggested he wants to write more material before deciding whether to move the project forward.
That means the latest development is significant, but it remains a potential reboot rather than a confirmed new series.
Lea Michele Is Ready For More Glee
One original cast member who has already made her feelings clear is Lea Michele.
Michele played Rachel Berry across all six seasons and recently said she would happily return to the world of Glee.
“I love Glee. I will always love Glee,” she told E! News.
“I love Ryan Murphy. It just holds such a special place in my heart for me… I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
Whether Michele is one of the approximately 10 cast members Murphy has spoken with has not been confirmed.
Other surviving members of the original ensemble include Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Dianna Agron, Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison and Harry Shum Jr.
Any reunion would, however, necessarily look very different from the original show.
Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera and Mark Salling have all died since Glee first aired.
How a new series might acknowledge Finn Hudson, Santana Lopez or Noah “Puck” Puckerman remains unknown.
Glee’s Queer Legacy Still Matters
When Glee premiered in 2009, mainstream television offered far fewer LGBTQ+ characters than audiences see today.
The series helped push queer stories into prime-time television through characters including Kurt Hummel, Blaine Anderson, Santana Lopez and Unique Adams.
Kurt and Blaine became one of the most prominent gay couples on network television, while Santana’s journey towards accepting her sexuality resonated strongly with queer audiences.
Unique, played by Alex Newell, also brought a highly visible transgender character into a mainstream musical comedy at a time when trans representation on television remained extremely limited.
The series won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2010 and 2011.
That does not mean every storyline has aged perfectly.
Like much of Glee, its queer representation could be heartfelt, chaotic, inconsistent and occasionally wildly misguided.
But its influence on a generation of LGBTQ+ viewers is difficult to ignore.
So, Is The Glee Reboot Actually Happening?
Not quite yet.
There is now a script.
Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan are working together again.
Around 10 original cast members have been approached.
And Murphy says those conversations have been positive.
What does not yet exist is an official order, announced platform, production schedule or confirmed returning cast.
Still, compared with Murphy merely floating the possibility two months ago, this is a sizeable step forward.
For a show that taught millions of viewers not to stop believin’, that feels rather appropriate.
