Dozens of traffic lights in Vienna have been changed to show same sex couples crossing the road instead of a traditional lone figure.
Vienna has changed the signal images at 120 pedestrian crossings, which also show heterosexual couples – in preparation for the Eurovision Song Contest later this month.
Officials said the signals were a sign of Vienna’s open-mindedness.
However, not everybody is thrilled with the changes. The BBC reports thatToni Mahdalik, from the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria called the initiative gender politics “gone mad”.
Mahdalik says the money would have been better spent on reducing poverty and improving unemployment figures.
The city says that the lights are meant to show tolerance and diversity. Municipal officials say they also hope the signals will draw more attention from pedestrians and reduce jaywalking.
