The results of a new study have been released detailing an overview of the LGBT community in the United States, which is now estimated to be approximately 4.5% of the adult population.
According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, the study showed that of the 11.3 million people who identify as LGBT, the majority of LGBT people (58%) are female and 29% of LGBT people over the age of 25 are raising children.
Looking at the results regionally, the study showed that Washington D.C. has the highest percentage of LGBT people with nearly 10% of the population identifying as LGBT, while North Dakota has the lowest percentage, sitting at 2.7%
Researchers who analysed data from the Gallup Daily Tracking Survey in order to create the detailed look at the LGBT community in the USA also found that the community is both racially and ethnically diverse, with 58% being White, 21% Latino, 12% Black, 2% Asian, and a further 1% being American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or other Pacific Islander.
Other key stats include:
• 56% or LGBT adults are under the age of 35, compared to 28% of non-LGBT adults.
• 1 in 4 LGBT adults (23%) are age 50 or older, compared to nearly half (47%) of non-LGBT adults.
• Washington State has the highest percentage of LGBT women (63%), while Washington D.C. has the highest percentage of LGBT men (65%).
Researchers summarised the finding by saying “These findings remind us that LGBT people are young and old, people of colour and white, they are parents, and they live in every state of the union.”
