Sydney Swans first-year player Riak Andrew is facing suspension after using a homophobic slur during a VFL match against North Melbourne on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, who is yet to make his AFL debut, used the slur during the reserves game, with the incident now under formal investigation by the AFL Integrity Unit.
In a statement released by the club, the Sydney Swans said that Andrew is remorseful and has taken full responsibility for his actions.
Club Responds: “This Does Not Reflect Our Values”
Swans CEO Tom Harley expressed disappointment over Andrew’s conduct:
“This behaviour does not reflect the values of our club, and we take this matter very seriously.”
Harley confirmed that the club is treating the incident as a chance for education and reflection.
“While it is disappointing, we recognise that Riak is at the beginning of his career, and we will use this as an opportunity to provide support and education, to ensure he understands the impact of his words.”
Incident Comes Weeks Before Swans’ Annual Pride Game
The timing of the incident has further heightened scrutiny, coming just two weeks before the Swans’ annual Pride Game against Essendon at the SCG on 2 August.
“In a fortnight, we will be playing in the Pride Game, a match that is incredibly important to our club,” Harley said. “We are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.”
Homophobic Slurs Under Spotlight in the AFL
Andrew’s case is the latest in a troubling trend of on-field homophobic language in the AFL and VFL.
- Earlier this month, West Coast Eagles midfielder Jack Graham was suspended for four matches after admitting to using a homophobic slur during a game.
- In 2023, three AFL players were also banned for similar incidents:
- Wil Powell (Gold Coast) – 5 matches
- Jeremy Finlayson (Port Adelaide) – 3 matches
- Lance Collard (St Kilda) – 6 matches for “highly offensive” remarks made during a VFL match
The AFL has pledged to continue enforcing strong disciplinary measures in response to discriminatory behaviour, as it faces ongoing calls to strengthen its commitment to inclusion and respect.
