Trans rights activist and lawyer Kelly Ellis has been successful in having the ‘Tranny-saurus’ cards that until recently were being sold at Whangarei Warehouse removed.
The ‘tranny-saurus’ cards which include an image of a lipstick wearing dinosaur and the words “Oh look! A tranny-saurus!” was spotted recently at Whangarei Warehouse and brought to the attention of trans rights activist and lawyer Kelly Ellis, who then informed the store of her disappointment.
Ellis says that The Warehouse were quick to reply and the cards have since been removed.
“I wrote to The Warehouse alerting them to it. They responded almost immediately and announced they’d pulled the card a couple of days later.”
Ellis says the fact that “tranny” and “tyrano” have some letters in common might amuse some, “but it’s a feeble joke at best and shouldn’t be used to justify prejudice.”
“To appreciate why they’re offensive, it’s important to acknowledge just how dangerous it is to be a trans woman. Our suicide rate is awful and, it seems, we are a community which has a lot of violence visited against it. “Tranny” is a perjorative word which most trans women don’t like. It’s seen as being the equivalent of using the “n” word about people of colour.”
