Stephen Williams appears in Velvet which debuts on 23 September. He runs over what he likes about the show and how he keeps that body looking great!
What are you most excited about in your performance for Velvet?
I think just getting a new audience to play with every night is pretty fun and exciting. There are some nights where the audience is great and then nights when the audience don’t play along so much, it makes it a bit of a challenge which is fun.
What can the audience expect from this show?
Marcia Hines does some amazing singing, there is some great dancing there, and some circus as well, but it’s quite high-level, very high-level really. It’s big, bright, colourful and exciting.
What do you love most about touring internationally?
Touring internationally, the answer is in the title I think? The ability to get paid and travel into the world is great …An ideal situation.
Your physique is amazing – what do you do to keep in shape…. Any tips for our readers?
I mean, I can get very technical and boring, but for me, mostly doing the shows is enough. I have a warm-up that I do before the show. I start with cardio, maybe 4 or 5 minutes high-intensity interval training. 5 minutes of that to get a sweat on and then some stretching, some dynamics stretching, some relaxation stretching and all sort of stuff, rolling on a ball, rolling on foam roller just to get completely mobile. Then I would do a bit of resistance training just before I go on to get everything biomechanical patterns working correctly.
Stephen Williams performs in VELVET playing September 21 – October 1 at Q Theatre as part of the Auckland Live International Cabaret Season from 14 September – 1 October.
