Opera Australia has released soprano Tamar Iveri from her contract and she will not be performing in its Sydney production of Otello in July and August.

A statement posted on the singer’s Facebook page last year compared gays and lesbians to fecal matter.

Opera Australia had been under intense public pressure to release the singer from her contract. Soon before her removal, a spokeswoman for major sponsors Qantas said the airline was “deeply concerned” by Iveri’s comments and was “discussing them with Opera Australia.”
