A popular gay men’s sauna in Jakarta has been raided by Indonesian Police, with at least 51 people arrested.

While most were released the following days, five employees at the sauna are now facing charges relating to the violation of the Law on Pornography, passed in 2008, which prohibits sex parties and “deviant sexual acts” including oral sex, sex between people of the same-sex and anal sex.

Human Rights Watch reports this is at least the fifth raid in Indonesia this year that targets LGBT+ people in private spaces. It notes the rise in anti-LGBT+ incidents since January 2016 coinciding with a rise in negative commentary by politicians and public officials
