American filmmaker, actor, and internet celebrity, Eugene Lee Yang, who is best known for his work with BuzzFeed and The Try Guys has come out as gay in a powerful dance video.
Despite the 33-year-old never actually saying the words “I’m gay” he instead tells his story through a choreographed dance with music by Odesza.
Starting out, the video shows Yang spending time with his family, where he attempts to express himself by putting on lipstick, before getting slapped.
Eugene Lee Yang later appears in a church service with a preacher who appears to condemn him. Later, he is seen dancing with a female dancer before a male dancer catches his eye. The female dancer hands him off and Yang engages in an intimate dance with the male dancer.
In the next scene, Yang dresses in drag and goes dancing at a gay club, where a man comes in and points his finger, in the imitation of a gun, at the crowd. A mob then comes over to Yang and beats him up.
In the finale, Yang walks through a screaming crowd while staring into the camera, and includes a fundraiser for the Trevor Project – an American non-profit organisation focused on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.
Explaining the video on Twitter, Yang said, “I created this music video as my personal way of coming out as a proud gay man who has many unheard, specific stories to tell.”
“I withheld because of fear and shame shaped by my background but I promise to give my full truth in the rest of my life’s work.”
Yang added, “You can turn off Find My Friends because I will be at the gay bars.”
