The declaration, aligning with Pope Francis’ inclusive vision since his papacy began in 2013, marks a significant deviation from past practices. It advocates for the Church’s openness and support to all individuals, particularly in times when they seek divine guidance and blessings. This move, while not fully legitimising same-sex relationships within the Church, represents a notable shift towards greater acceptance.
LGBTQ+ rights groups and advocates have welcomed the Vatican’s decision. Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, lauded this move as recognising the worthiness of LGBTQ+ relationships within the Church. She noted the Pope’s consistent efforts to diminish the divisive use of LGBTQ+ issues in religious contexts.
Similarly, New Ways Ministry, an organisation championing LGBTQ+ Catholic rights, praised the decision. Executive Director Francis DeBernardo highlighted the importance of this step in moving away from the stringent moral scrutinies prevalent in previous papacies. This change is an essential stride towards full equality for LGBTQ+ Catholics.
Pope Francis’ progressive actions have been evident in various instances, including his recent lunch with a group of trans women and his affirmation of baptism and godparent roles for transgender individuals. His September response to inquiries from five cardinals further clarified his stance on same-sex unions, reiterating the Church’s traditional view on marriage while advocating for blessings on same-sex relationships.
While not changing the doctrinal stance on marriage, this development from the Vatican is a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance, offering an olive branch to LGBTQ+ individuals seeking a place within the Catholic Church.
